I admit, the reason I picked this book out of this year's Nutmeg Nominees to fill my down hour between work and rehearsal was that it's about a dwarf. And I shouldn't expect much depth from a book written for 10-year-olds. But honestly, the Newbery Award winners never sound like they're written for a little kid. This one seemed to have a subtext that says, "It's ok, kid, I understand you. It's hard to be a kid, and it's especially hard when you're only 42 inches tall and feel like you're different from everyone else. Don't worry, be yourself, and enjoy your childhood because you're 10 and pretty soon having a climbing wall in your bedroom isn't going to solve all your problems." Yeah, it was a little condescending.
But it wasn't a bad book. It was creative and interesting, and I enjoyed it. I just didn't love it.
