Water for Elephants
Yep, it's as good as everyone says it is. I think it works because it's not too much of a love story, nor too much of an adventure. It's both. It's exciting, it's about a different era, there's an elephant, it's the circus... Fun!
I hope this doesn't spoil anything (and I don't think it does), but it starts out with the narrator in his old age, insisting that another old man, who claims to have carried water for the circus elephants, is lying. And we never find out how the narrator knows (except that he once worked on a circus). There's no, "And we used a HOSE, not BUCKETS!" or anything like that. Maybe I missed something, because I was reading kind of fast once I got into it. If you know, please tell me.
Also, don't read the notes at the end before you finish the book. I did, and I totally expected a different ending because of it.
