After a long day of flights, we finally arrived in Quito! After we traversed customs, a tour guide met us and brought us to the hotel, a Sheraton. It's across the street from a KFC. We were warned not to drink water out of the tap, but otherwise, it has all the comforts of home, including wi-fi.
Quito is at an elevation of 9,000 ft, and many people experience altitude sickness here, in that they sleep for a couple of hours and then wake up feeling like they're suffocating. Our guide, Gonzalo, recommended drinking coca tea to help us sleep. The production of coca tea is prohibited in Ecuador, but it is legally imported from Peru.
Tomorrow we wake for an introduction to Ecuador and a tour of Quito. They say the weather forecaster is always wrong here, so wear a fleece and sunglasses, and bring an umbrella.
